Aligarh on Google Earth Intro: Google Earth is free software that allows you to view a super high-resolution photo of the earth (actually a mosaic of thousands of satellite images). This giant earth-photo is overlayed onto a 3D representation of the topography underneath. You can change your angle of view, elevation of view, and generally "fly around" and get a pretty good idea of the spatial relationships of things around - just about anywhere on the earth, including the oceans. Google Earth is really only practical if you have a high-speed internet connection because of the massive amount of data that needs to be downloaded for it to work. It also helps if you have a fast computer & big monitor too. The Google Earth software is available for free download from: http://earth.google.com Google Earth also allows you to add your own layers onto the view. You can view things like administrative boundaries, roads, rivers, canals, buildings, and more. With the latest release of Google Earth, adding your own layer content is possible. One such layer that that I've added is the district and block boundaries of Aligarh. The layer can be displayed as an overlay in Google Earth to integrate information form two sources. Click here to view the administrative boundaries of Aligarh in Google Earth. You may also download the file http://cps-amu.org/aligarh.kmz and save it somewhere on your computer. Then, go to the Google Earth software and select File->Open... and open the file "aligarh.kmz". (or, you can open it directly in Google Earth by double clicking it) Topographic Maps: Google is capable of displaying moderate resolution topographid data, whih is excellent for viewing landscape and landforms. Topo maps will snap into view in an appropriate size as you scroll around. These tend to look best if you're looking down from an altitude of around 23,000 feet or so. I've demonstrated this by creating an annotated layer of the Goriganga River Watershed (a very important river system) in the Eastern Kumaon Himalaya of Uttarakhand State. This kind of visualization of the terrain can be an excellent tool for planners, engineers, administrators and law enforcing agencies.
